Just found this site. I went on holidays many moons ago to Calella and remember Filip and Paul (Grimes). Remember him coming to see me when he came home after his car crash, hope they are all well. I spent most of my holiday in the Thames and Alcatraz loved it when the guys used to do the champagne fountain. Got lots of pics will have to dig them out. Happy days!!! x
My name was Knocker (sean) I worked in cheers for 89 and 90 seasons with tricky, scotty, andy, goerdie tony(gipsy), johnny and Agus. Remember you briedy and podge also worked for a month with barry and garry in tropics but Jorge sacked me for being hideously drunk. Remember the lizzies or at least the two Paulas from the trio also Shed, Spaghetti Dave and the D.J who had a bad stutter until he held a microphone to his mouth (Amazing but true). Hedonistic days to say the least. hello to anyone who remembers me and everyone who shared the similar experiences of working in Calella. Love this site. Will dig out some photos.

1st: Tropics is a disco in Lloret de Mar. In Calella was TROPIC Fun Pub. Doesn't exist. I'm happy to talk with you. I don't remember Tropic's owner name.
Nice to see this blog. I didn’t work in Calella but was there June/July 89. We came allot in Cheers and had a great time. Of course with the boys from Cheers; Scottie, Tricky, Johnny, Jason (got sacked in August I believe), Tony (gipsy), etc and some girls we met Karen Stevenson and Katie, last name I can’t remember. I kept contact with Tricky for a short while and with Karen for 2 ½ year. Karen and Katie went back in August 89 and worked for a few weeks at Western Saloon. I know she kept contact with Scottie, Tricky and Tony at that time. I also know that Scottie kept contact with a friend of mine Natasja, at least he tried but it’s too long ago to say what happen.
Unfortunately Karen and me lost contact after those years and I’m searching already a while for her. Does anyone knows her and the boys. If so can you let me know where to find them. It’s difficult to find them on Facebook as their names come often and I cannot remember any last name from the boys.
Would be nice if I can find them after such a long time. Hope anyone can help!
its good to see all the comments about the good old days i worked in the Rabbies for five years during the late seventies i have listed some of the local worthies from that era. Some of them can be contacted through the Calella veterans page on facebook so i have fond memories of Terri Shanley,Silly Pete,Doyle,Zeb,wee Bobbie,PC,Fosby,Sensible,Lynda,Scottish Mary.Big Davy,Scouse,Merv, yvonne,Madrid,(Eddie & Coff deceased rip)Dot and Jayne ,Billy Evans,Tommo,Father Murphy, quick Draw, mad danny,Big Algy, rod the prod, ross, pedro, joe, alan(gladys)wee chugga, wee davie, sutcliffe, the general, math, pete day.bodger i have probably missed half of the people i knew back then but it was a hazy time love to catch up with anyone who remembers me.
hey briedy how the devil are you. I do remember the last time I saw you in covent garden I believe. I'm just chiselling away living on a small remote Scottish island. I'm trying to set up a BlogSpot to write down some yarns from the old days. They may be a little risqué but the names of the guilty have been changed to protect the innocent who have been named cos they were.... Innocent!!
Alfredo from Germany was working in Callela season 1980 and 81.Most of my friends were English like the two Daves,Jonny Madrid,Bodger or Simon.Does anybody know, where they're all goneß
Johny Madrids still going strong at the Alcatraz never changes! Great nite! Scouse (Mr Phil Love) still goes in I didn't realise he has come out of the closet? Cheers Peb Stockport

Still buddys with Knocker and Andy.Cant listen to "come on eileen" or "feeling hot hot hot" without a sense of nostalgia and a chuckle. Last visited Calella in 1999 to catch up with me old mucker Tricky. bet i wouldnt even recognise the place nowadays. i'll look on regularly to see if anyones about. love to hear from anyone who was around then, lost all my photyos in late 90's :(
I remember Tropics I loved it that was there in 1987 I think. I was with my boyfriend but there were these really good looking black haired lads that worked there dancing! I remember the Western Saloon too, but it is difficult to remember more now :( xxx
We were there July 1985. . Stayed at the holiday centre. . 12 Welsh girls who took over The talk of the town and The Thames. 2 incredible weeks with jordi, andreas , cliff from talk of the town and John and Andy from the Thames! (Sorry if I've missed anyone out )..be good if anyone remembered us lol!
visited Calella with my mates in 89&90. Does anybody remember or know what happened to any of the lads from Cheers? Tony, Tricky, Johnny the DJ. Was on a girls holiday there June 1988, we would go to Tropic and Beach Boys Bar, remember Scotty Andy George and August, have loads of photos somewhere.
I was in Calella in the eighties, from 1980 till 1990, remember Eddie (RIP), Primo, Marcos, Silly Pete, who called me crazy Pete. I worked in the Apples and Pears and Disco Underground. Greets Crazy Pete
I did a summer there in 1989 (i think) started at coasters and then the rest of the summer at Hollywood. Never forget the times riding round the town on mini penny farthing bikes promoting the club and then finishing work and going to Disco High. All the British workers together. Shared a flat with and excuse my French "piss pot Pete, Scottish Alan and a guy from Chesterfield who for the life of me I can't remember his name. Any one who was there who can remember me get in touch. Jon. Jonharvey80@gmail.com
Hello. I work in 90 and 91 in chaplins, rising sun and frog and toad. returned home with Clarie form pebbels, we were together for 3-4 years after. Have no contact with anyone from that time. Met peach that I work with in the rising sun, back in 2005 when I was on holiday in calella.
I worked in Lennon's Bar when it first opened in 1981 - I remember we could drink while working so god knows how we ever gave anyone the right change, and the endless repetitions of Grease video. My friend Sarah worked at the Highwayman. We used to stop at the bakery for breakfast when we went home at about 6 am. Great summer.
Went in '83 - first boys holiday. Have some great pics / memories. Fantastic. Malibu Bar as well? Does anyone know the address of Chaplins or Rovers Return bar? Going near there this summer and wanted to pop by..!

Steve Nye Hello Calella mob of the 80s, I worked in San Jaime apartments 85/86, the BlackBull 86/87,Apples and Pears 87/89. I remember all you guys as most of you ate in the san jaime cafe. The character that stands out for me was the great Eddie from Cheers because of his wisdom on life. also if i was to name a top party animal its probably Welsh Clive from the Blackbull, he knew how to party like a pep monster. All my memories from that time were life changing, some fukin great times and some fukin tragedies too. But it was all amazing. Special Love sent to The Lizzies, i lived with you for 2 seasons,The Lizzies called me Debs, fuck knows why.
Ahh my god taffy hear worked in cats whiskers pinada 88 then in the Alcatraz with johny Madrid 89 fantastic 2 seasons see subway still there hi its Alison hope you are all well need to revisit .Jane yvonne cant remember the others in the Alcatraz but what memories Sykes kev Carlisle .Hi Jonn hope all is well
Spent every night in the 'Thames' with our friends Jimmy and Christine and their 5 boys! Think 'George'was running it then with a few other entertainment lads, this was in the late 80's I think. Our favourite record and dance at the time was 'Hot,Hot,Hot'we went for 3 or 4 years on the trot, they were great times.!!!
My name is Gitte Brandenburg and I worked at the danish restaurant Dina. I hang out at The Red Lion and George & the Dragon. Remember Spud, Carlos and the other crazy guys...two came to see me in Denmark..but sadly I lost contact. Find me on FB if I know you!
Hi Red here. Worked in Chaplins Malgrat with Clyde and JonJon. Then 2 years in Chaplins Calella with Peter,Kenny,Little Davy and Cilla. Then managed Golden Gloves in its first year, 1985. Fantastic memories but never been back since. Still in touch with a few friends through Facebook and started up a facebook page a few years ago. Anyway, hi to anyone who remembers me.
I was there in '82. Best time of my life! Does anyone remember "Ted" or Duncan from Essex. I lost touch. He had chevrons shaved in to the back of his head and he had a mate who looked the spit of Nick Heywood and Haircut 100! alli_dalli@yahoo.com
You mentioned Teddy Would that be Ted from Harlow, Essex? Had chevrons shaved into the back of his head and he had a mate who looked the spit of Nick Heywood of haircut 100? He and I were great mates in 1982 1983 but over the years we lost touch.
Well well, the legend that is Foxy, good times mate, always remember your tripe and tomatoes. i went back last year for a week, 30 years to the day. obviously its not the same. only the alcatraz and gringos are still open but it was good to walk around with all the good memories. Mary still has gringos but the white horse is gone. got my dates wrong on the last post,,it was 87 to 90. great to hear from you mate.
it kinda sucks that 31 years later, i still miss it, we were kings,we were alive. how can we get that back? where do we go from here? is it just me? or am I just dreaming of a past that we will never see again? fuck this old shit, we were there, we mattered, we made theyre holiday,we made our future. we have lived.
Paul 'George' was the the name of the owner of the Thames when we used to go there. We went back a few years later but it wasn't the same sorry to say. They had a small stage area built on the left as you go in the door, whereas before you could dance anywhere on the ground floor, but we usually sat upstairs on the O/s verandah.
FFS just stumbled across this site - I'm Gary(Gaz) I did 8 or 9 years (my memory is shit) and worked in Tropic with Barry(Horse), Knocker, Scottie, Andy, Welsh Ritchie(The Machine) plus loads of others I can't recall. I do however remember Tricky, Johnny and August from Cheers and the legend that is Podge. They were crazy times and I've still got the scars and tattoos to remind me. I met my wife in Calella and am still happily married, so not all bad!
Hi Steve, Yes loads of curly hair, tied back in a ponytail - lol. It's grey now but at least I've still got some. I remember the San Jaime - wasn't that the stop off for the Harry Shaw buses(Had to google it as my memory is shot)? Or have I got it mixed up? Any one know of Podge? I met him a few times back in the UK and I see he posted in 2009 with a hotmail address but no response.
Hey Gaz how are ya,I'll still have my cygnet ring back if your selling!!! Was with knocker and Andy last week.wow how time flies.just seen foxy on here too.great memories.
Hi all I worked in the Apples 85/86 with Eddie RIP, also worked in the coconut club in 87. Met my ex missus there Vicky. Now i own a bar in Laos South East Asia . Going back to Callela next year first time since 88. cheers Andy
Got some photos but can't upload them, come on site master, pull your finger out. San Jaime was indeed the Harry Shaw drop off, as I remember everytime a new bus full of Hen parties came in, the carpark was full of off duty bar workers saying goodbye and saying hello.
Hey Scottie (cygnet ring you say..mmmm I can't recall that!!!) and Knocker - good to hear from you both. Do you have email address - mine is gazhughes@yahoo.com
Hi, I worked in BOB'S Disco on the door 93. I was one of the big group of Irish that were out there for the olympics in 92. I used to drink in the Beach Boys Club. I heard Brian had passed away last year. I am actually going back to Callela on Fri 5 Oct for 5 days .
Had our 1st holiday abroad in calella in 87 spent almost every night in the Thames bar what an eye opener Was 2 English lads who got everyone dancing small blond lad and a tall one Still can't get spagna "call me " out my head and the dance routine that went with brilliant memerios still the best holiday we ever had
I went back may 2017 for a 30 year to the day memory. The ONLY pubs left are The Alcatraz and Gringo Joes above the now closed White Horse. Still worth a visit though if only for the past good times.
Hi Gary It's Karen (Stevenson) I'm hoping you are the right one. From Liverpool? If so, we got our ear pierced together. I was out there with Katie. Be great to catch up
Hi,stayed in the osiris, roof bar was just opened the same week,in the early 80s and remember the white horse,I'm sure the owners were scouse and they used to pull little tricks on the punters with plastic spiders etc attached to little pulleys.always mea t to go back one year, but as I've read it's closed now along with lot of other pubs of course.
I worked in The Thames in 1986/87. The small blonde lad was called Ricky (I think) and the tall blonde lad John. I was the tall dark haired guy, but may have already moved to the Apple & Pears to work for my mate Jon, who had previously managed The Thames for several years and had taken a lease to run The Apples & Pears. Good times, great memories!
Hi lived in Calella there too in 93, one of the Irish working there for the Olympics. Used to drink in Beach Boys, very sorry to hear about Brian, was a very nice guy. Any one remember Sam from Cork who worked in the Beach Boys? Liam
Yeah I remember Adam, Harry's my mate we grew up together and first visited Calella in 88Hes still as crazy as ever!!! Who's this? I'll let him know you're asking after him. Social media and technology ain't his thing!!!
Hi, my name is Theo, I'm from Holland. I worked in Calella in 1990. First as a DJ in the Western Saloon with Terry, Jaime and Elvira. Also 1 or 2 weeks in Manhattan, 1 day in Alcatraz with johnny Madrid. Then I was the DJ in The Thames. Worked there with Flip (the Dutch guy) and Ritchie. Can't remember the names of the owners at that time, was it George and his wife Julie? After that I did drive-inn shows in hotel Bon Repos, Esplai and some other hotels from which I can't remember the name anymore. I lived in Concorde apartments, just around the corner from Cheers. I was in Cheers almost every day, in the afternoon and after work. I finished with the drive-inn around midnight, after that most of the time I went to Cheers. And then after Cheers closes we went to Highwayman. I remember Knocker, Johnny the DJ, Andy (I bought him his first "broodje kroket", a Dutch snack) and the owner (was his name Paul?). I once had to bring him home in his car after he had fallen of someone's back when he was "surfing" on music of The Beach Boys. I still remember the last record of every evening in Cheers: Everything I own by Bread. I also remember Eddie (if I got the name right). I met him in Bob's the years before when I was in Calella on holiday. I think he was the owner of Cheers. He died on a heart attack the year I started working in Calella. There are more guys (and girls) from Cheers but I can't remember their names. I also remember Clive from Wales. August started in Tropic that year, if I remember well he was working in Cheers the year(s) before. I know he went to Holland with Elvira the year after and started working there. Don't know if he's still living there. At the end of the season I was the Dj in the discotheque underneath hotel Bon Repos. At that time a lot of the workers came there after they finished working. I had a great time in Calella. Since then I always wanted to go back to Spain and that's what I did last year. I'm living a little more south now at the Costa Calida.
OMG think I remember this back 1988, Tommy, Jimmy & Martin, one of them poured a whole bottle of champagne over my cousin it was her 20th Birthday, Martin always wanted to get cheeky pecks from all the girls 🤩 X
Hi everybody, I'm Johnny worked in Rising Sun, Fawlty Towers and Cheers from 1985 to 1992. Are you the "Johnny B Good" DJ from Cheers? The one that always played "everything I own" from Bread as the last record? I was DJ in the Thames at that time. I still have the announcement poster from the DJ competition in the High from that year. We are both on it. If I remember well you won the competition that year.
Lol . I visited him a couple of years ago , in Nijmegen, I don’t remember you , but I didn’t spend much time in the Thames in 1990. How come you didn’t come back in 91 , I went back into the Thames , in 91 .
In 91 I planned to go to Greece but then the Gulf war started, There were no tourists in Greece that year so I stayed in Holland. I'm living in Spain now though
Anyone remember the night that the High club put on a competion for all the bars which involved dressing and singing to a popular song? I was in the Black Bull at the time and we did Chubby Checker and the fat boys, Welsh Clive went a bit overboard with the make up, Mad, great night.
I don't remember that night in the High. I remember the DJ competition though. I took part in it. The winning DJ was Johnny from Cheers. I also remember Clive from the Black Bull (who doesn't)
I was there in 1983, Worked in the Rovers Return and also the Farmers Arms as well as other jobs. was there from mid March until October. it would be nice if someone remembered me and got in touch.
Clive passed away quite a few years back . I worked in fawltys 87 and 88 and knew him well..met up with him a few times back home as he lived close to me. Definitely one of life characters

Does anyone remember the bar called Tropics?
Gibbo (mingle!)
I was in Calella for a couple of months in '78 looking for work. Unfortunately I got knocked over by a car (pi$$ed) and broke my leg and had to go home.
I have very fond memories of the time I had there.
I can remember PC, fosby, silly Pete, Coffee, Madrid and a Danish bar owner who i think was named Nils. PC gave me a lift back from the Hospital in Barcelona.
One of my closest mates is Billy Evans who was there for a few years.
Another mate who was with me was John Mann (the Head).
My favourite put there was The Red Lion.

Can anyone tell me if Tricky is still out there?

Hi guys,
Nice to see this blog.
Thanks
Josta (Netherlands)

hey briedy how the devil are you. Innocent!!
Alfredo from Germany was working in Callela season 1980 and 81.Most
of my friends were English like the two Daves,Jonny Madrid,Bodger or Simon.Does anybody know, where
they're all goneß
Johny Madrids still going strong at the Alcatraz never changes!

Does any one remover maxims bar?
I was there in '82. Best time of my life! Does anyone remember "Ted" or Duncan from Essex. I lost touch. He had chevrons shaved in to the back of his head and he had a mate who looked the spit of Nick Heywood and Haircut 100! alli_dalli@yahoo.com
You mentioned Teddy Would that be Ted from Harlow, Essex? Had chevrons shaved into the back of his head and he had a mate who looked the spit of Nick Heywood of haircut 100? He and I were great mates in 1982 1983 but over the years we lost touch.
I lived with you to Steve ( foxy ) I had the front bedroom in the rabbies , you were in the living room
Hello Dave , I worked in the Thames from 87 to 92 , apart from a year off in 1990 , we didn’t have anyone called George work there mate
Hi Josta, it's Karen here.
Be great to catch up. I'm on Facebook as Karen Piper
I remember you Gary, you had black curly hair yeah? Tropics was the place to be in new town.
Foxy, I was in the living room but it was a cubby hole with a curtain, you had your own room, jammy sod.
Gaz the dj?
Hey Gaz how are ya,I'll still have my cygnet ring back if your selling!!! Was with knocker and Andy last week.wow how time flies.just seen foxy on here too.great memories.

Got some photos but can't upload them, come on site master, pull your finger out. San Jaime was indeed the Harry Shaw drop off, as I remember everytime a new bus full of Hen parties came in, the carpark was full of off duty bar workers saying goodbye and saying hello.

I have a photo very similar to this lol, load of guys from army always sat at the bar, looks like the back of the head that’s in my photo too lol
Sorry it was the 90s.not the 80s.(old age lol)
I worked in The Thames in 1986/87. The small blonde lad was called Ricky (I think) and the tall blonde lad John. I was the tall dark haired guy, but may have already moved to the Apple & Pears to work for my mate Jon, who had previously managed The Thames for several years and had taken a lease to run The Apples & Pears. Good times, great memories!
Is that you rob?
Hi lived in Calella there too in 93, one of the Irish working there for the Olympics. Used to drink in Beach Boys, very sorry to hear about Brian, was a very nice guy. Any one remember Sam from Cork who worked in the Beach Boys? Liam

Closed years a go...
I remember you, i was one of the many girls who spent 2 weeks there, very happy times
Cathy you’ll have to elaborate lol
OMG think I remember this back 1988, Tommy, Jimmy & Martin, one of them poured a whole bottle of champagne over my cousin it was her 20th Birthday, Martin always wanted to get cheeky pecks from all the girls 🤩 X
Remember Pidge? Does anyone know where he is these days?
He’s still living in calella

In 91 I planned to go to Greece but then the Gulf war started, There were no tourists in Greece that year so I stayed in Holland. I'm living in Spain now though
Anyone remember the night that the High club put on a competion for all the bars which involved dressing and singing to a popular song? I was in the Black Bull at the time and we did Chubby Checker and the fat boys, Welsh Clive went a bit overboard with the make up, Mad, great night.
Just remembered The Galeon, that was also a good after work club. Not a night went by without some kind of fight. Good times.
I don't remember that night in the High. I remember the DJ competition though.
I took part in it. The winning DJ was Johnny from Cheers.
I also remember Clive from the Black Bull (who doesn't)
Clive was a legend, wonder if He's still about? I remember he drank pep like it was water, kept bragging that his poo was green.
